A Drive to Create Artist Reception

Join us for an artist reception celebrating “A Drive to Create”, a collaboration between Center for Community Arts and Lead Artist Peter Foucault.

“A Drive to Create” engaged residents of two communities in Walnut Creek: Villa Vasconcellos and the Oaks, in six weeks of intensive art making workshops through the mediums of collage, ceramics, textiles and watercolor. Workshops were led by Foucault and Center for Community Arts instructors Alexandra Miukhin. Ellen Sachtschale and Casey Rasmussen White. Residents of all ages and range of artistic experience were invited to roll up their sleeves and become active participants to create their own Joseph Cornell inspired mixed media shadow box exploring what the ideas of “Family” and “Home” mean to them. Additionally, affordable housing staff at the City of Walnut Creek’s Community and Economic Development Department added their work to the dialogue.

This exhibition is the culmination of that process and all of the boxes created by residents at both locations, as well as boxes created by instructors and site facilitators, will be displayed together, creating an intricate installation and celebration of community insight into these very personal themes. In addition, a custom teardrop trailer created by Foucault that transforms into a mobile art making station will engage visitors to the Center and at select pop-up art making activities during the exhibit period. Participating teaching artists and residents will be celebrating the exhibition and family, friends and community members are welcome to attend to view residents work and create at the mobile art making station.

“A Drive to Create” will be showing at Shadelands Art Center from May 8th - June 5th, 2017.
